League of American Bicyclists Names Sitka a “Bronze” Level Bicycle Friendly Community.

(Washington, DC) - The League of American Bicyclists congratulates Sitka on achieving Bronze Bicycle Friendly Community status – Sitka joins 57 other Bronze BFCs in the country.

More than 210 communities have applied for BFC recognition, and 84 currently have a Bronze or higher designation. The award is recognition of the excellent progress Sitka has made to encourage more people to bicycle and to ride safely.

“The Bicycle Friendly Community program  recognizes communities that actively support bicycling and inspires them to improve conditions and opportunities for bicycling”, said Andy Clarke, President of the League.  “The BFC designation is determined by a set of standards that we call the Five Es: Engineering, Education, Encouragement, Enforcement and Evaluation.”

“The League helps communities evaluate their physical environment for cycling, their programs for teaching cyclists how to ride safely and encouraging them, working on the enforcement of traffic laws and evaluating future plans to improve cycling.  Sitka made great strides in creating a better cycling environment and should be very proud of this achievement.”

There are currently:
·       Two Platinum Level Bicycle Friendly Communities (Portland, OR and Davis, CA)
·       Six Golds
·       19 Silvers
·       57 Bronze
