The City and Borough of Sitka and the Sitka Walkability Advocacy Collab are inviting community members to submit design ideas for a temporary crosswalk safety demonstration project planned for downtown Sitka.

The project seeks community-designed, earth-tone geometric patterns that could be incorporated into an existing Lincoln Street crosswalk later this summer. The purpose of the demonstration project is to emphasize existing pedestrian crossings, increase visibility, and encourage awareness of pedestrian activity in the downtown area.

This effort stems from Sitka's participation in the Walkability Action Institute (WAI), a national program focused on improving walkability and pedestrian safety through partnerships involving public health, transportation, planning, and local government. In April 2025, the Sitka Assembly approved participation in the program and designated Assembly Member JJ Carlson to serve as Sitka's elected official representative on the interdisciplinary team. The team explored opportunities to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility within the community.

The proposed crosswalk enhancement is intended to supplement, not replace, existing crosswalk markings. Any selected design will be temporary in nature and implemented as a demonstration project to evaluate its effectiveness and community reception.

Community members of all ages are encouraged to participate. No artistic experience is necessary.

Design idea entry forms are available at City Hall and the Sitka Public Library. Completed entries must be returned by 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 24, 2026. There is no limit to the number of entries an individual may submit. All submissions must meet the design criteria outlined on the entry form.

Selected design concepts will be showcased at 6:00 p.m. on June 25, 2026, at Harrigan Centennial Hall. Final designs may be refined prior to installation and will be painted later this summer as weather, funding, and labor resources allow.
