When does the City and Borough of Sitka conduct elections and what hours are the polling places open?

Elections are held every year on the 1st Tuesday in October for the regular election. Polling places are open from 7:00 am through 8:00 pm. State and federal primary elections are held in even numbered years on the fourth Tuesday in August. State and federal general elections are held in even numbered years on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November. Who is eligible to vote in a Sitka election?

Persons who are qualified to vote in state elections and have been registered to vote at an address within the City and Borough of Sitka for at least 30 days prior to the election are eligible to vote. If you have moved, be sure to turn in a voter registration form with the changes. This must be done no later than 30 days in advance of the election. Click here for additional information. When must I register to vote to participate in an election?

You must register to vote no later than 30 days before an election. To register, or update your voter registration record, visit: https://voterregistration.alaska.gov/ or stop by the Municipal Clerk’s Office in City Hall at 100 Lincoln Street, 3rd floor. Do I have to register for each election?

No. If you are registered to vote in State elections, you are also registered to vote in local elections. Your registration remains active as long as you remain a resident of Alaska in good standing. To check your voter registration status visit: https://myvoterinformation.alaska.gov

How old must I be to register to vote?

You may register anytime within 90 days immediately preceding your 18th birthday. Persons older than 18 may register at anytime. What do I do if my residence address has changed?

To vote in your correct precinct for an election, you must update your registration no later than 30 days before an election by turning in a voter registration form with all of your updated information. To update your voter registration record, visit: https://voterregistration.alaska.gov/ or stop by the Municipal Clerk’s Office in City Hall at 100 Lincoln Street, 3rd floor. Where is my polling place?

Sitka is divided into two precincts: Sitka No. 1 and Sitka No. 2. Both precincts are located at Harrigan Centennial Hall.  Polls are open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Election Day.

I want to vote early or I'm not sure I'll be in town for the Municipal Election. How do I get an absentee ballot?

The following absentee and early voting options are available for the October 3 Municipal Election: 

Absentee voting by mail (application deadline is September 26). Click HERE for application. 

Absentee voting by fax or electronic transmission (available 15 days before the Election and on Election Day). Click HERE for application. 

Absentee voting by personal representative (available weekdays September 18-October 2 at Harrigan Centennial Hall and on Election Day).  

Absentee voting in-person (available on or after the day ballots are available, through September 15). 

Early voting in-person (available weekdays September 18-October 2 at Harrigan Centennial Hall from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.).

If I am unable to vote in person due to age, illness or a disability, how may I vote?

You may apply for a by-mail ballot, or you may have someone pick up and deliver a ballot to you. This person is called a personal representative. Your personal representative may pick up a ballot for you at the absentee voting location (Harrigan Centennial Hall) starting 15 days before Election Day or at your polling place on Election Day.
