Where to Register to Vote

You can register to vote in Alaska by completing a Voter Registration Application and presenting it in person to the Municipal Clerk at 100 Lincoln St. Sitka, AK or to a voter registration agency such as the Department of Motor Vehicles, Health and Social Services, Community and Economic Development, recruitment offices of the armed forces of the United States located in Alaska. Or you may also simply mail it to a Division of Elections office.

Qualifications to vote and register in Alaska

A person may vote at any election who:

  • is a citizen of the United States,
  • is 18 years of age or older,
  • has been a resident of the state and of the election district in which the person seeks to vote for at least 30 days just before the election,
  • has registered before the election registration deadline, and
  • is not registered to vote in another jurisdiction.

Identification Requirements

Federal law now requires individuals who initially register to vote by mail to include information that will verify their identity. If you have not previously registered to vote in Alaska and you are submitting your registration application by mail, the State of Alaska Division of Elections requests that you provide a copy of ONE of the following:

  • Driver's License
  • State Identification Card
  • Birth Certificate
  • Passport
  • Hunting and Fishing License

In addition, please provide:

  1. Your birth date
  2. Your social security number or at least the last 4 digits of your social security number
  3. If we cannot verify your identity when you register to vote, you will be required to provide certain identification when voting in the next state-conducted election.

Voter Registration Deadline

The voter registration deadline is 30 days before an election. One exception is for an Incorporation Election: a voter must be registered 30 days before the Director of Elections signs the Order and Notice of Election.
