Assembly Meetings - Agenda, Viewing, and Public Comment

Regular Assembly Meetings are held on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. in Harrigan Centennial Hall. Agenda and supporting documentation are available at https://sitka.legistar.com/Calendar.aspx, the Sitka Public Library, or by contacting the Municipal Clerk's Office at City Hall. Public comment on agenda items and “Persons to be heard” is encouraged and welcomed. Citizens may provide comments by email, in person, or by phone. Regular and special Assembly meetings are live-streamed through the City's website and YouTube channel. In addition, regular meetings are aired live on KCAW FM 104.7. Parks and Recreation Teen Open Swim
3/20/2023

The City and Borough of Sitka Parks and Recreation, in collaboration with the Community Recreation Initiative, will hold Teen Open Swim on Friday, March 24, and Friday, April 14 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. at Blatchley Middle School (BMS), 601 Halibut Point Road. These events are free of charge and funded by the Alaska Children’s Trust.

Assembly Recruits Tourism Task Force Members

The City and Borough of Sitka Assembly established the Tourism Task Force to help facilitate Sitka’s transition into long-term tourism management. The Assembly is looking for volunteers to serve in the following categories: Downtown Business Corridor (1 seat), Tours and Attractions (1 seat), Business in General (1 seat), and Community At-Large (2 seats). Members will be appointed at the April 25 Assembly meeting.

The City and Borough of Sitka (CBS) Port and Harbors Commission is looking for interested individuals to serve on the newly formed Tourism Task Force established by the CBS Assembly to facilitate Sitka’s transition to long-term tourism management. The Commission will be recommending an individual for appointment by the Assembly to serve on the Task Force. This Task Force member will advocate for the interests and priorities of the Commission, as well as the fishing and maritime industries in Sitka. The Commission will review applications at their April 12 meeting and make a recommendation to the Assembly for appointment on April 25.

This Task Force member will advocate for the interests and priorities of the Commission and provide a sustainability perspective on tourism. The Commission will review applications at their April 4 meeting and make a recommendation to the Assembly for appointment on April 25.

Completion of Assessment Rolls

The City and Borough of Sitka hereby announces that the 2023 Property Assessments have been completed and mailed March 15, 2023. Every owner of real or personal business property should receive an assessment notice indicating the 2023 values. It is the duty of every person owning property in the City & Borough of Sitka to advise the Assessor of any errors or omissions observed in the assessment of the property.

The property owner has thirty (30) days from the mailing of notices in which to appeal the 2023 values to the Assessor. If relief from an alleged error in valuation is not adjusted by the Assessor to the taxpayer’s satisfaction, the appellant may appeal to the Board of Equalization.

The Board of Equalization will meet at the Harrigan Centennial Hall at 6:00 p.m. May 3, 2023. Appeals to the Board must be filed directly and in writing to the Assessor no later than 4:00 p.m. Monday April 17, 2023.

Spring 2023 Free Household Hazardous Waste Event
3/14/2023

Although the City and Borough of Sitka’s Annual Spring Clean Up Event is postponed until August, the 2023 Free Household Hazardous Waste Event is taking place Saturday, April 29 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Sunday, April 30 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Households are eligible for the free event. Items can be delivered to the Wastewater Treatment Plant located at 100 Alice Loop.

Spring Clean Up 2023 Postponed

Parks and Recreation Open Gym on Saturdays in March
2/28/2023

The City and Borough of Sitka Parks and Recreation will be holding open skate and open gym on Saturdays in March at Blatchley Middle School (BMS), 601 Halibut Point Road. Family open roller-skating will be held in the BMS MPR from 1:00 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. Family open gym in the BMS main gym will be from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. followed by 35+ open basketball from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. 

Open gym punch cards for youth, adults, and families will be available for purchase at the Parks and Recreation office located at BMS. For more information, please contact Parks and Recreation by emailing recreation@cityofsitka.org or calling 907.747.4031.


Update of Winter Restroom Closures
1/27/2023

City and Borough of Sitka’s Moller Field Sports Complex, Sandy Beach, and Whale Park restroom facilities have been added to the winter closure rotation and will be closed until April due to multiple attempts of suspected arson, ongoing vandalism, recent illicit drug-related activity, and major damage.

Seasonal Sales Tax Rate Change

The City and Borough of Sitka Tax Office would like to remind all citizens that the seasonal sales tax rate will decrease to 5% effective October 1, 2022, through March 31, 2023. Katlian Street Closed to Pedestrian Traffic in the 400 Block

The City and Borough of Sitka opened Katlian Street to two-way vehicle traffic in the 400 block. Pedestrian traffic remains closed. Recycle Center Accepted Materials
08/17/2022

The City and Borough of Sitka Public Works Department urge citizens to follow instructions and signage at the Recycle Center at 802 Sawmill Creek Road. Recycled items are source separated and baled for shipping off the island; contaminates to our recycled goods prevent the CBS from obtaining a return on the recycled materials. The contaminated materials must be sent to the landfill and are costly. 

The Recycle Center accepts aluminum, corrugated cardboard, glass, metal, newspaper, and plastic #1 and #2. For further information, please visit the solid waste page under the Public Works Department at www.cityofsitka.com or call 907.747.1804.
