Sitka Community Choir Begins September 7

The City of Sitka Parks and Recreation announces the first rehearsal for Sitka Community Choir on Sunday, September 7 at 3:30 p.m. No experience necessary, all are welcome to come sing. Lead by Andrew Hames and Hannah Jylkka, rehearsals will take place on Sundays from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the Sitka High School music room, 1000 Lake Street. Participants should park in the back parking lot closest to the Sitka Performing Arts Center. Registration is required, sign up now at recreation.cityofsitka.com. The fee for this program is $20.

Junior Reporter Club Registration Opens

The City of Sitka Parks and Recreation division, in partnership with the Daily Sitka Sentinel, offers a Junior Reporter Club to students grades 6-8, starting September 15. Participants will explore journalism with Daily Sitka Sentinel reporters Anna Laffrey and Cathy Li. Students will practice the fundamentals of news reporting, writing, and editing. Learn how journalists contribute to their communities and build media literacy. The club will feature field trips and special guests with lessons in photojournalism, broadcasting, social media and more. Each participant will write a project for publication in the Daily Sitka Sentinel.

Blatchley Art Club Registration Open Now

Registration for the City and Borough of Sitka Parks and Recreation’s Blatchley Art Club program is open now at recreation.cityofsitka.com. Taught by Sandy Fontaine, youth grades 6 to 8 will be exposed to a wide variety of art projects and mediums. Art Club will meet on Thursdays after school from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the Blatchley Middle School Home Ec. room. This program will run from September 4 to November 20, with additional sessions during the spring semester. Topics will include drawing, shading, and watercolor. The fee for this program is $25 per month for a total of $75. Scholarships are available, please apply before registering. Free STEM Kits at Sitka Public Library

Children 7-10 are invited to pick up a STEM kit-to-go at Sitka Public Library. This program will run every Friday from September 5 to September 26, and every Friday from November 7 to December 12. Kits are free and they will be available until they are gone.

Tourism Commission Meeting - August 14

The Tourism Commission will hold its regular meeting on Thursday, August 14, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. at Harrigan Centennial Hall, 330 Harbor Drive. Agenda items include review of a Request for Qualifications for Visit Sitka services, promoting the Tourism Best Management Practices (TBMP) program, and end-of-season review planning. The public is welcome to attend.
Street Maintenance Installing Speed Bumps on Katlian Avene

The City and Borough of Sitka Street Maintenance team will be installing two sets of speed bumps on Katlian Avenue Tuesday, August 12 at approximately 340 and 500 Katlian Avenue (locations marked in red on the map below). This traffic safety improvement is intended to reduce vehicle speeds and enhance safety for everyone using the roadway. In addition to the speed bumps, there will be advance warning signs installed, as well as a “Speed Bump” sign at each location.
Please use caution when driving through the area today and be aware of crews working in the roadway. Once installed, drivers are reminded to approach the new speed bumps slowly and with care.

Temporary Utility and Payment Office Counter Closure

The City and Borough of Sitka Utility and Payment Office, located on the first floor of City Hall, 100 Lincoln Street, will be closed on Tuesday, August 19 and Wednesday, August 20, from 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. for training. Senior Coffee Socials Continue in August

The City and Borough of Sitka Parks and Recreation, in partnership with Catholic Community Services, continues to offer free Senior Coffee Socials in August. These socials take place on Mondays from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Swan Lake Senior Center, 402 Lake Street. An assortment of baked goods will be provided, alongside coffee, tea, and juice. Puzzles, books, playing cards, and other activities are available for use. All seniors are invited to enjoy. Sitka Historic Preservation Commission Meeting - August 13

The Sitka Historic Preservation Commission will hold its regular monthly meeting at 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at Harrigan Centennial Hall. The Commission will discuss a memorial and street naming policy and review the draft Historic Preservation Plan. The commission will also consider a deck replacement at 615 Etolin Street and an airport beacon adjacent to the airport runway. Public comment is welcome. Stay and Play Program at the Library

Babies, toddlers, and siblings up to five-years-old are invited to the Stay and Play Program at Sitka Public Library. Programs will run the following Tuesdays from 3.30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. at the Sitka Public Library's multipurpose room: August 19, August 26, September 16 and September 23. This is a self-guided program. Families will have access to a variety of tinkering toys and activities. Materials will be available to use until 4:25 p.m. to allow for clean-up time. Taught by Riley Whitson, adults are invited to learn the fundamentals of tabletop roleplaying games. After attending the two sessions, participants will be ready to lead their own Dungeons and Dragons session at home! Class fee is $20, preregistration is required with limited space. Big Ideas Book Club at Sitka Public Library

The public is invited to explore big ideas through short stories and small books with the Big Ideas Book Club, hosted by Garrett Faulkner from Outer Coast and Margot O’Connell from Sitka Public Library. The group will meet five times starting August 28th and ending on September 25th, with each meeting focused on a different short story or novella. Road Closure Notice: Siginaka Way

A section of Siginaka Way is currently closed to all through traffic as part of the Thomsen Lift Station Improvement Project.
Motorists and pedestrians are advised to seek alternate routes and avoid the area. Traffic control and detour signage are in place to guide local access.

Traffic Flow Modification at Sitka Rocky Gutierrez Airport Terminal

Starting July 21, traffic flow in front of Rocky Gutierrez Airport will be modified to accommodate construction of frontage improvements as part of Phase 2 of the Sitka Rocky Gutierrez Airport Terminal Improvement project. Traveling public should expect partial closures of the loading zone and are advised to use the parking lot for loading and unloading during these closures. Please refrain from stopping in the Drive Through Lane or Turning Lane during this time.
Impacts to the traffic flow are anticipated through the end of September 2025.

Tiny Tin Library Program for Tweens and Teens

Tweens and teens are invited to create their own tiny tin library with supplies provided at Sitka Public Library. Once they build their mini library, they can keep it at home, or they can bring it back to the library to put on display until August 9. Interested tweens and teens can ask for a bag with the supplies at the circulation desk. Bags are free, and they will be available until they are gone.

New Utility Payment System Launches August 1

The City and Borough of Sitka will be transitioning to a new payment system for utility bills paid online or at the utility counter. The new system will launch on August 1, 2025.

If you are currently enrolled in autopay for utilities, you will need to re-enroll through the new portal after August 1. Moorage payments are not affected.

Non-Profit Organizations Annual Grant Funding Applications

Grant applications are available for non-profit organizations to apply for annual funding from the City and Borough of Sitka FY26 General Fund. $45,000 is available for disbursement. Applications are available at City Hall, 100 Lincoln Street, 3rd Floor (Municipal Clerk’s Office), and online HERE.
Submit completed applications to the Municipal Clerk’s Office by 5:00 p.m. Friday, August 15, 2025. Applications received after the time fixed for receipt will not be considered. Applications will be awarded in September at an Assembly Special Meeting.

Section of Maksoutoff Street Closed Through September

The City and Borough of Sitka will close a section of Maksoutoff Street from Lincoln Street to the Wells Fargo driveway to accommodate restroom facilities beginning Thursday, June 5. This upper section of Maksoutoff Street will be closed through the end of September.
