The mission of Sitka Public Library is to provide a collection of informational, cultural, recreational, educational, and local historical resources to meet the evolving library needs of its patrons and to promote reading as an essential element of an informed citizenry in a democracy.

Sitka Public Library endeavors to enrich and enhance the quality of life of each member of our community by assisting in the acquisition of knowledge, promoting the love of reading and encouraging lifelong learning.  We strive to provide services and resources that inform, enrich and empower each person we serve through free, equal and reliable access to informational, educational, cultural, and recreational resources.  We endeavor to acquire and utilize appropriate communications technologies that extend, expand and enhance service in an inviting, healthy environment in which individuals are encouraged to safely access, explore and discover the world.

NASA@ My Library

We are excited to announce that we have been selected through a competitive application process to be part of NASA@ My Library, an education initiative created to increase and enhance STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) learning opportunities for library patrons. Sitka Public Library staff look forward to introducing STEAM concepts to younger patrons and exploring the universe together with people of all ages during public programs in 2021 and 2022.

As a NASA@ My Library Partner, the Sitka Public Library will hold public programs that explore NASA science and technology, specifically around NASA's newest next-generation telescope launch (Fall 2021), the first telescope images (Spring 2022), and as part of the 2022 Summer Reading Program. More information, including a program schedule, will be available in the coming months.

As part of this initiative, Sitka Public Library staff will receive training and resources to implement NASA events and programming, access to a university Subject Matter Expert (SME) to support patron engagement, and $1,600 for programming expenses.

These resources, along with support by the NASA@ My Library team, will enable Sitka Public Library staff to conduct excellent NASA STEAM programming and activities. NASA@ My Library will create compelling learning experiences for library visitors and share the story, science, and adventure of NASA's scientific explorations of planet Earth, our solar system, and the universe beyond.

NASA@ My Library is offered by the National Center for Interactive Learning (NCIL) at the Space Science Institute (SSI) in partnership with the ALA Public Programs Office, Lunar and Planetary Institute (LPI) and Education Development Center (EDC).
