Boards, Commissions, & Committees

The City and Borough of Sitka has various boards, commissions, and committees comprised of volunteer citizens who are interested in helping to shape the future of Sitka. By participating in one of these advisory bodies, volunteers make an important contribution to the community. Their input and recommendations to the Assembly on programs and issues ensure a strong public voice. Volunteers are one of Sitka's most valuable assets.

Animal Hearing Board

Meets as needed for hearings. No scheduled meetings.
Hears appeals regarding the classification of dogs; Reviews proposed written administrative orders or ordinances; and makes decisions on applications for reclassification of dogs.

Bear Task Force

Sunset January 2023 The Bear Task Force should review previous suggestions, investigate efforts in other communities, and report back to the assembly in six months. Any recommendations that include an expense should come with funding opportunities, such as grants, if possible.

Building Appeals Board

Meets as needed for hearings. No scheduled meetings.
Will only meet when called to hear appeals of decisions by the building official.

Employment Relations Board

Meets as needed
The City and Borough of Sitka's Employee Relations Board (ERB) is an advisory body that helps manage and address matters related to labor relations between the unions and its employees.

GPIP Board of Directors

Meets on the 3rd Thursday of the month at 3:00 p.m.
Subject to state laws and municipal ordinances, generally exercise all powers necessary to the operation of all park facilities in the public interest and in a sound business manner.

Health Needs and Human Services Commission

Meets on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 12:00 p.m.
Annually identify goals developed through the collection and consolidation of vital and current information on human service trends as well as public input.

Historic Preservation Commission

Meets on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 6:15 p.m.
Prepares and maintains an inventory of buildings and sites of historical, cultural, architectural, geographical, and archeological significance.

Investment Committee

Recommend updates to the investment policy; review current investments; recommend actions to be taken on investments that are downgraded or put on a negative credit watch; recommend appropriate benchmarks for portfolio performance.

General supervision and care of the library and buildings and grounds.

Local Emergency Planning Committee

Meets on the 2nd Thursday of the month at 12:00 p.m.
Help communities be prepared for, mitigate, and respond to, disasters and emergencies by preparing an emergency plan; help involve citizens in the discussion about what an appropriate emergency response is, where public funds are spent, and how much of those funds should go to training and purchasing of response equipment.

Park and Recreation Committee

Meets on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 12:00 p.m.
Promotes interest in recreational resources, sites, and programs to assure they are being utilized to the maximum extent; assist in locating facilities or space for recreational activities and for new parks

Planning Commission

Meets on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. Reports and recommends to the assembly on proposals pertaining to planning and zoning and promotes public interest and understanding of the comprehensive plan.

Police and Fire Commission

Meets on the 4th Wednesday of the month at 5:30 p.m.
Advise the Assembly concerning police and fire department matters, make recommendations concerning public safety, and undertake such other duties as the Assembly may assign.

Port and Harbors Commission

Meets on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 6:00 p.m.
Assist in planning new harbors; evaluate needs for harbor services; examine and update harbor ordinances; review operations and budgets; recommend priorities and rates; prepare an annual report to assembly on the status of the harbor system.
