Purpose: The Planning and Community Development Department strives to create a safe, functional, and attractive city through coordinated community visioning, comprehensive planning, and development review. Providing exceptional public service is our highest priority. Our staff assists the public, Assembly, and various Commissions and Departments by providing information, guidance, and direction on land use issues and regulations.

Planning Commission

Reports and recommends to the assembly on proposals and other matters pertaining to planning and zoning. Formulates planning proposals for submission to the assembly. Promotes public interest and understanding of the comprehensive plan.

Historic Preservation Commission

Prepares and maintains an inventory of buildings and sites of historical, cultural, architectural, geographical, and archeological significance. Nominates places to the National Register of Historic Places. Works toward the continuing education of citizens regarding historic preservation of the community's history.

Sustainability Commission

Works towards catalyzing a healthy community now and in the future by proposing solutions to environmental, social, and economic concerns of the City and Borough of Sitka, its partners, and community members.

Sitka Comprehensive Plan 2030

The Sitka Comprehensive Plan 2030 was unanimously approved by the Assembly on May 22, 2018. A big thank you to all who participated in our process.
