Kimsham Ballfields Compost and Yard Waste Disposal Reminder

The City and Borough of Sitka is reminding residents that the compost and material stockpile areas at Kimsham Ballfields are not public disposal sites and are not available for personal use.

The compost and stockpile areas are used to produce mulch, compost, and soil for City projects and operations. Reusing these materials helps reduce waste, lower costs, and avoid purchasing additional soil, mulch, and compost.

Recently, staff have observed unauthorized dumping of yard waste, including weeds and other materials, into the compost area. These materials can contaminate the composting process and reduce the City's ability to produce usable soil and mulch. Staff have also noted instances of materials being removed from stockpiles intended for City projects and operations.

Residents looking to dispose of yard waste or overburden materials are encouraged to use the Granite Creek Overburden Disposal Site. The site is operated by Marble Island, LLC and is available for public use.

For information about the Granite Creek Overburden Disposal Site, contact Marble Island LLC at 907.623.0760. For general questions, contact the City and Borough of Sitka Public Works Department at 907.747.1804 or email publicworks@cityofsitka.org.

We appreciate the public's cooperation in helping protect these resources and ensuring materials remain available for municipal operations and community projects.
