Biography
My name is Thor Christianson, and I am running for Mayor. I was born and raised here in Sitka and am raising my two daughters here with my wife Jessica. I have been elected six times to the assembly. One of my daughters is a student at Sitka High School and the other is attending DePaul University. I have been a volunteer at the Sitka Fire Department since 1997 and I work at SEREMS.
I live in Jamestown Bay on my family’s island, where my family has lived since 1952. I have lived a few other places over the years, but Sitka always called me back, so I moved back for good in 1997. I have always called Sitka home, and I can’t think of any way that I would ever move away from Sitka. I love it here and want to help keep Sitka the town I love.
Advocacy Statement
I have been on the Assembly for 16 years now, and I still find it as rewarding as ever! I love being able to help Sitkans find solutions to issues with our city.
We have several challenges right now that I hope to be able to make a positive impact on.
The State continues to underfund the schools, so we have to do what we can to keep them at the high standards we have come to expect.
I hope to be able to work on finding ways to reduce the cost of housing in Sitka by helping to shepherd the process of getting land in cities inventory out on the market.
I’m excited to work on finding ways to address the childcare crisis we find ourselves in. I believe that lack of affordable childcare is choking Sitka’s growth and health.
We need to continue to look for ways to both have a vibrant tourism industry and find ways to mitigate the negative effects on Sitka’s citizens.
These are all things I have been already working on, and I feel that as Mayor I will be better positioned to make real progress on the challenges Sitka faces. If I’m elected mayor I pledge to work with all Sitkans to keep Sitka a wonderful place to live!
