Biography
Matthew Potter is an Alaska educator, school leader, and parent with more than 15 years of experience serving students across the state. His career has included work as a teacher, counselor, special education director, assistant principal, principal, and now as a school board member. He holds a master’s degree in educational leadership from the University of Alaska Southeast and an Alaska administrative certificate. Matthew currently serves as the Full-Service Community Schools Project Coordinator for Southeast Alaska, supporting schools in building stronger partnerships among students, families, educators, and communities. Having lived and worked in Sitka for many years, he understands both the strengths of the community and the challenges facing its schools. Matthew and his wife are raising two children, including a student in the Sitka School District. He brings practical leadership experience, a statewide perspective, and a strong commitment to public education.
Advocacy Statement
I believe every student deserves a strong public education that prepares them for a meaningful future. Success should not be defined by a single pathway. Our schools must prepare students for college, workforce training, military service, industry certifications, entrepreneurship, and direct entry into the workforce. Whatever path a student chooses, that student should leave the Sitka School District with a plan and the skills, confidence, and support needed to follow it.
Effective school boards keep students at the center while making responsible decisions for the entire district. I will advocate for high expectations, strong instruction, safe and welcoming schools, responsible use of public funds, and programs that reflect both student needs and community priorities. I also believe decisions are stronger when students, families, educators, staff, and community partners have meaningful opportunities to participate.
Transparency and trust are essential. Board decisions should be grounded in accurate information, clearly explained, and made through fair and consistent processes. I will listen carefully, ask questions, consider long-term impacts, and communicate honestly, including when choices are challenging.
As a parent, educator, administrator, and district employee, I understand school issues from several perspectives. My goal is not to advance one group or agenda, but to help the board make thoughtful, student-centered decisions that strengthen Sitka’s schools and earn the community’s trust.
