Biography
My name is Phil Burdick. I came to Sitka in 1992. I am married and have two children; one in high school and the other a college graduate. All of my work and service in Sitka has been dedicated to youth, through coaching swimming, board service, and as an employee of Sitka Schools. I have 30 years’ experience in the Sitka School District as teacher, principal, district administrator, and school board member. Much of the work I did in the district was shared with my wife, Sarah Ferrency. I currently consult with schools, tribes, and youth organizations in implementing and integrating Restorative Practices in Education using Circle Peacekeeping, Culturally Responsive Education, and Trauma Informed practices. My focus is on creating equitable outcomes for all students through growth, accountability, and support. I am absolutely dedicated to this community, and I believe in our potential to build a better world through education.
Advocacy Statement
I am Phil Burdick, and I am running for re-election to the Sitka School Board. Since moving to Sitka in 1992, I strived to connect with and serve this community. Thirty years’ experience in the Sitka School District gives me insight into the daily realities of students, families, and staff. In my various roles in SSD, I put students and families first and supported staff growth.
I sat on boards including the Island Institute, Youth Advocates of Sitka, Mt. Edgecumbe Preschool, and the SNEP Parent Committee. Every board on which I served was dedicated to supporting young people and education. I sat on the Assembly in the late 90’s where I was liaison to the Sitka Tribe where I modeled the necessity of government to government relationships. I currently sit on the board for the Alaska Association of School Boards, which gives me statewide perspective and insight into how best to advocate for our children’s education.
It is my belief that strong public education is the foundation for a healthy community. Through education, we can create a civically engaged, workforce ready, service minded community. I believe we can accomplish this through compassion, accountability, and rigor.
If elected I will advocate at the local, state, and federal level to adequately fund education. I will help create policy that supports equitable outcomes for all students. I will work with our Superintendent to ensure every student feels welcomed and accomplished, every family member is respected and heard, and staff are supported and challenged.
