Portable Sign & Sidewalk Obstruction Reminder for Businesses

The City and Borough of Sitka reminds businesses to ensure portable signs, including A-frame and sandwich board signs, are placed in accordance with Sitka General Code.

Portable Signs

Portable signs, including A-frame and sandwich board signs, are permitted only on private property within the Central Business District and are not allowed in other zoning districts. (SGC 22.20.090(D))

Seasonal Sidewalk Obstruction Restrictions

From May 1 through September 30, between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., no fixtures or objects may be placed within the first eight feet of the sidewalk adjacent to the curb along the following designated downtown streets. This helps keep pedestrian routes safe and accessible.

The restriction applies to:

  • Lincoln Street between Baranof Street and Harbor Way
  • Harbor Way between Lincoln Street and Harbor Drive
  • Harbor Drive between Harbor Way and Lincoln Street
  • Lake Street between Lincoln Street and Oja Way
  • Katlian Avenue between Lincoln Street and the right-of-way that separates Lots 4 and 6 of Block 1 of United States Survey 2542
  • Cathedral Way between Seward Street and Lincoln Street

(SGC 14.20.010(A))

Signs in the Public Right-of-Way

Signs may be located within the municipal street right-of-way only if prior permission has been obtained from the Sitka Police Chief. (SGC 14.30.010(B))
